06:23 pm: More civics and personal finance requirements in high school, less calculus
Well the point has been raised that there isn't very much trust in the general population, and I would have to agree I guess that not a lot of people are really interested in politics.
In fact I didn't really get interested until 2nd year of university when politics seemed like the least boring alternative for a writing requirement.
But now that I am I propose that the subjects of politics and personal finance be required in high school more so than maths and sciences. I know that there are several careers where one does not need to take an integral, but everyone needs to know how to manager their cash, and everyone should have an in depth knowledge of the political process.
This would help to make people more informed and interested when making politically motivated choices.
What other subjects should be mandatory for high school?
What high school subjects can be moved to apprenticeship/college/university. I vote calculus as one of the first things I was taught in first year university calculus was "forget everything they taught you in high school"
12:35 am: Do any of the previous ideas have merit?
So should those ideas be put forth to the general public, maybe something along the lines of a facebook group?
I'm guessing they need to be refined a lot more, but what do you guys think?
Any other ideas?
12:33 am: First Past the Post to Any Canadian with an internet connection should vote on individual proposals
So our current system is First Past the Post.
I'm a little tired of voting for someone else to make decisions for me. I think that with the technology we have, we should be able to set up a system where each individual proposal can be put forth to the general population and I should just be able to go to
www.canadianvoter.com or some such thing (I dunno if that is a site) and vote for the different proposals.
12:31 am: Make citizens initiatives legally binding
According to tejas, citizen's initiatives are not legally binding.
This sucks, how am I supposed to get things changed if an idea that has majority of the populations support can't get passed. (Although to be fair, I don't know of anything that the majority of population has supported that wasn't brought up in government).
12:24 am: Changing prison system
Okay I'm annoyed with two problems I see:
1. People being let out of jail when they really shouldn't be. (The police should not have to issue warnings about released convicts "likely to reoffend")
2. People in jail who understand what they did was wrong and are ready to be productive members of society.
Maybe I've watched Gandhi one to many times, but this whole eye for an eye being part of the criminal justice system is getting ridiculous.
I propose:
1. Get rid of the retribution portion of criminal justice system. I know it's crazy and makes victims really pissed off, but it ain't really helping.
2. Make psychological evaluation requirement for getting out of prison. In fact make it the only requirement. If you can't pass the evaluation stating you can reasonably be a safe and productive member of society, you don't get out of jail.
What about they number of years that the current system uses? I.e 25 years/ life for murder etc? Those should be used to decide the first psychological evaluation. Prisoners can opt to get evaluations sooner but they would have to pay for them. (Or maybe just pay if they fail the evaluation I dunno)
This way productive people can get out quicker and I don't have to hear about dangerous pedophiles being released because their prison sentence is up.
12:16 am: Changing tax system who's with me?
I have a proposal for changing the tax system. Mostly because I'm annoyed with paying taxes that have nothing to do with the expenses that taxes are supposed to pay for. I realize the government needs money to function, but damn it's getting kinda weird.
So here is proposal:
Step 1: Abolish all previous taxes (I mean all: property, income, sales etc)
Assumptions: The government expenses are linked mostly to services provided by the government. Each service has a range of consumers. For example federal services benefit all Canadians, so range of consumers = all (voting) Canadians, Provincial services benefit everyone in province, municipal benefit everyone in a region etc. For the initial stages we can keep it simple, eventually as technology and accounting software get more sophisticated, we can create more complex models (mark out the exact range of that powerstation etc)
Replace with following tax.
For each service, take cost of service/ range of consumers. That is price that a single consumer that uses that service should pay.
Done.
Now why is this not done?
